Scherazade

Soo-Young Lee is a very fine young clarinet player (clarinetist).   She auditioned for the "YouTube" symphony and made it. They took 2-3 clarinetists which makes the competition horrendous. For flute, clarinet and trumpet, with the huge talent pool because starting these instruments is comparably inexpensive (compared to a bassoon for instance that costs 10 times as much) and their popularity (all girls in 4th grade want to play the flute trust me on that - well not all, but you get the idea)..the auditions for these instruments....well its horrendous.  To audition you submitted a "YouTube" type audition tape of what are called "excerpts"...or parts of a big symphonic or solo piece...the big time solos.  Soo-Young had to play a part from Scheherazade (1000 and 1 Nights).  It isn't particularly difficult as notes go. What is hard is "hearing the rest of the orchestra" while you are playing it (you hear it in your mind) and fit it in..that's the difference between a musician and just a player.  Soo-Young is a musician.

Here is her tape followed by the actual movement played by a youth orchstra. You can hear the solo she played.
