Prokofiev was a Russian composer who fled and came here. He wrote Peter and the Wolf (you have to have encountered it) on a train ride to Chicago with no piano.....just wrote it out. Claudio Abbado (the conductor here) was Music Director of the Berlin Philharmonic (perhaps the world's finest orchestra) as well as having conducted 200+ recordings with every major orchestra in the world. He went to Venezuela to work with the State's High School honors orchestra and this is a movement from the aforementioned Prokofiev's Violin Concerto.
It is quirky and difficult. That he (Abaddo) would lend himself to high school kids is proved here. Very talented high school kids by the way. You don't get this good without being really something...and you don't get Abbado to conduct unless it is. The soloist is all of 17. She will be a star - correction "is a star".
