Well shoot. You can read about the demise of the Tavern on the Green in NYC here or you can remember it from movies and events here.
I had the good fortune of going to a number of media related events (FOX upfront reception being the most over the top) and some other times when in the neighborhood I went in for coffee and something just to enjoy it.
The food was always out of this world good and the staff - no way to call them waiters or greeters or anything like that - was beyond their best asset. People talk about the value of great employees and the really good places brag on them endlessly. Smith and Wollensky - the Steak House over on Lex or 3rd...whatever...is like that. 21 had them. Staff sooooo amazingly good that it was a pleasure just to be in their company let alone dine with them. Tavern on the Green has and had that kind of staff. Not snooty. Completely without guile...just very very good people who felt like and old friend in 10 secs.
This place will be missed and sorely so.
