This is a true story.
There is a woman in Texas, El Paso I think, who is divorced with 2 kids. She worked her husband's business off and on and he dumped her. He pays here $1,000/mo. in alimony and support. She has contracted ALS. Because she just helped out, she didn't participate in social security so that entire avenue is lost to her.
There is no question that she is going to die. She does have a couple years, maybe 2 years on her feet and a year of horrible suffering and she will die of suffocation as her breathing muscles will cease to function.
There are substantial costs healthcare wise to make things a bit easier but, unfortunately for her, she lives in Texas. Her alimony takes her above the threshold for medicaid. Governor Perry refused the medicare expansion provisions. She turned to the exchange, since Texas didn't participate in that, and for her and her kids, she is looking at $600/mo although there might be some help for that.
If you have ALS past the early stages, work isn't in the cards. She is stuck. Governor Perry has done his level best to keep the Affordable Care Act out of his state that has the highest percentage of uninsured in the country. He won. She lost.
Next time that bastard tells you about his concern for the people, hurl him to the ground and kick him...as that is what he did to this woman and her two kids.
