Arnold Bax/Dermont O'Byrne in 1922 |
Years ago I took a series of English lit classes. For some reason I thought it would be useful. Let's say it didn't come up a work much and it is not worth the time of day at cocktail parties. Perhaps I couldn't properly work it into a conversation. Also, just perhaps, the area of knowledge either is just interesting to some and opaque to others.
In that time of semi-useless study I ran into a poet named Dermot O’Byrne. He didn't leave much of an impression other than 40 years later I still remember that name; a stage name or nom de plume if there ever was one.
Seems Mr. O'Byrne the poet was also Arnold Bax the composer. I knew his music here and there but Sir Arnold was a big cheese in English music and very well known and admired from the turn of the century to his death in 1953. I read up on him this morning and spent several hours listening to some of his music that clearly had never reached my ears. Take some time and read a good Wiki overview here.
You might like this as a sampler of his music.
