Not the one under the door in winter! No, no, no. It was the "greetings from Uncle Sam" one that plunked you down in the middle of the Army without so much as a fair-thee-well.
Our local draft board was run by person named Edith Shark. On the occasion of the 18th birthday, all males were to report to the office and fill out the "selective service" form. I was 30-some days late. For "punishment", I had to write out the entire selective service page that dealt with "late registration". As an aside, Lyndon Johnson was on TV in the little office explaining how it was necessary to call up about a half million draftees into the armed forces due to the communist aggression in Vietnam. Goose. Cooked.
A popular TV show about then was Green Acres. Actually it was very funny. We missed the political humor built into it until Arnold Ziffel (a pig) was drafted and then got his deferment. Not because he was a pig, by the way.
Not sure why that came to mind today. Just thought I'd share. The draft part starts at 10:40 into the episode if you don't want to wait around.
