Are we better off not knowing?

About 15 years or so give or take there was a sudden influx of asteroid hitting earth movies (Deep Impact, Comet, Armageddon, etc.) and most were pretty silly in plot;  man sees end of life coming from deep space, rock appears, rock gets blown up, earth saved.  We are reminded that we have a bull's eye painted on our planet when things like Asteroid 1012 LZ1 whiz by in the night sky.  A few hundred thousand miles give or take and a city block of rock gives us a good whack.

Our chances of getting hit by a big rock from space are 100%. It is an absolute probability turned certainty. Would we rather not know or is it a comfort that we do know?

We don't have a superman to zip into space to deflect an asteroid and our feeble attempts at the Reagan-type Star Wars "anti-thingy" protection systems seem pretty much over matched.  Point being there isn't a heck of a lot anyone can do and this LZ1 Asteroid was only spotted a few days ago anyway.  You can't pack the family for a weekend trip in a few days let alone gather up the earth's defensive resources and shot a rock out of the sky.

Besides it would get trapped in Congress and they would be on vacation.
