The two Wisconsin fellas (in white) on the right are in the end zone. The big guy on the left on the left (#53) is on the one yard line. #7 Nichols, from Michigan State grabbed the ball off a rebounded pass attempt with no time on the clock and after a review, the umpire said he was across the goal (as the shadow would support and about 7 different cameras caught) and therefore a touchdown and Michigan State beat Wisconsin 37-31.
In the scheme of life, to have victory or a tie swept from your hands with no time to respond is a heart breaker - like lying on the death bed with the grim reaper showing up and your accountant saying "don't worry, your heirs will pay your tax bill". For those on the plus side of the ledger plays like this can make a week or a month, put a smile on a Monday Face and generally put some Geritol in your system.
When I went to school there we were a winning program of sorts, having come off a decade of dominance and then started the decline and for 30 years we were not too great....some great games but then some times when we could only beat ourselves. I generally decry the use of the word "we" when referring to sports teams as it signifies ownership or participation....as in "our team needs to get serious" - well they are serious, just not talented and it is offensive for someone to juxtapose anything other than fan fanaticism into the mix.
But I can freely say "We alumni" and speaking as such, my hats off to Wisconsin for a great effort and equally so, my hats off to my alma mater for, after watching for 3hours or so on a Saturday night, having a team and a play that had me standing with excitement and waking up this morning anxious to read a sports section.
