Just a little suspension of belief

Sometimes something floats into view that demands a little rethinking.  The other morning this little square sailed viking long boat showed up, passing between some more modern examples, and if you can blow up the picture, you will note two oarsmen hard at work as there was no wind at all and no matter how you slice it, a sailing boat without wind is just a rowboat with a dream.

I watched a few minutes of the republican "debate" last night and that is what brought the above scene to mind.  You can draw your conclusions as to what the connection was that struck me but suffice to say that all of those folks looked both miserable and adrift.  Romney had some wind at his back but it also is clear that he has a lot of the "hell-bent" types who are rowing in the wrong direction and his chances of overcoming them are somewhere between slim and none.  He'll get the nomination probably because the others are so God-awful choices, sincere as they might be, and the Tea Party may hold their noses and vote for him but more than likely they will stick to some ill-begotten principle and either stay home or vote for some third party guy.

Mr. Obama continues to flounder around and seems to be a bit weak-hearted in taking on the bullies who cornered him in the Washington playground.  He needs his big brother to show up and extract him from the predicament; chasing the others away.

The net effect is that we awake the next day to the same sense of disbelief that greats us when a Viking longboat is rowed into view...I mean we know what it is and that is someone's "lark"...well I'm sure you know what I mean.
