Before you think me nuts, vocally when you sing MSU you acually pronounce it Hemmm HeSSS HoUUU -the HoUUU like in Who but the W silent....bored yet?...but I digress...try it when you MSU faithful sing along today. Even on this glorious Saturday, with much to do in the yard and errands like mad, I'm waiting for 330pm and the MSU v. Notre Dame game. Waiting and its like going on a first date; a few hours before you kinda shut down real life and gear up. I'm geared up.
There are moments in your earlier times, memories of sorts, and most are just a sentence long when you think about it that way. Oh yes, trig class when I finally 'got it' instead of being bewildered, a walk to class first day of college, that kinda thing. Then of course there are memories that are full paragraphs - even short stories - with smells and mind-pictures and of course the sounds. I was in the band (actually president in 1968-69) and going to the football and basketball games, playing the fight song, marching by Sparty - the greatest college mascot of all time, the crowd 5 deep on each side standing still and watching us with admiration and support - no look of "oh those nerds", and then singing the alma mater at Landon Field and once again at the tunnel entrance to the stadium.(recognize the Verdi?) Those are the times that are paragraphs and, well, it is special and makes me all teary eyed. I can't listen to the Alma Mater without thinking about being on that field, with the alumni standing and misting up and wondering why the incredible sentimentality in their faces and eyes. Now I know.
GO STATE.
MSU, we love thy shadows
When twilight silence falls,
Flushing deep and softly paling
O’er ivy covered halls;
Beneath the pines we’ll gather
To give our faith so true,
Sing our love for Alma Mater
And thy praises MSU.
