Don Imus, a national talk radio host who after decades of well deserved accolades for both humor, good guests with something to say and time to say it, and charitable fund-raising next to none, ran afoul of an ill-thought comment and disappeared off radio. Now he is back and syndicated and although some of the edge has departed, it is still very funny and he gets great guests from whom he spurs on and demands valuable contributions.
One of the old running gags was a bit called "Which doesn't belong and why"? presented by one of his regularly staff members acting in the character of Cardinal O'Connell. It was a take-off on the old IQ test question where you are asked to pick the one item out of four or so that was out of place. It was almost always an amazingly creative take on the joke premise and listening to Imus now, I'm sorry that it is gone as commentary, it was clever and telling and went way past being just locker room humor. It added to the discussion and gave some direction to how we might think of things.
Obviously we are knee deep in a swamp of our own making - hey, we elected congress - and the folks tasked with solving the immediate issues of the budget are getting a lot of advice; tons in fact. They aren't getting it much from the humorists like Imus except from what he can draw from his guests and that has been dampened down a whole lot. Colbert does his part but it is all drowned out by the non-Washington or x-Washington crowd with axes to grind. There are a lot of them and most have motive well past helping the country solve the problems. Karl Rove and Newt Gingrich have both weighed in (did I say that??) with guidance to just figure a way to shut down government and blame the democrats or Obama or both. A weight room full of others are taking the "stand tough" and blame Obama bloviation course while a couple more just are after ratings.
These folks all seem to look and sound the same....very very similar physically as well....just observin' so to speak...so it might be hard to discern which doesn't belong and why? Might as well play the game because these guys add nothing except noise and Lord knows there is enough of that from the guys who really were elected.
