This piece of music, written by a guy (Wagner) who really was a self taught musician, a scoundrel, a guy one step ahead of the law, x-wives, bankruptcy and creditors....well he wrote this. I have a copy of the original score ... I mean the real one...in his writing and reproduced in the 20s for a lot of German nationalist thinking.
Wagner was anti-Semitic...to the point that most Germans had issues in the 19th century. I've read everything there is to read about Wagner, Germans, Hitler - the whole thing...yes he was a really bad guy but not in a crazy way...just was what he was during a time when the Palin references to blood libel were rampant...and although anything that has an ounce of religious hate - right or left - leaves my blood boiling mad, Wagner was really neither. He wrote in the passion of the day which at that time was not a subject of excuses or guilt. That came later when we came to our senses as a people of this earth and figured out that being an anti-Semite was evil and sure ride on the river Styx.
But this piece - this little section of a 4 hour opera - these 6 minutes...well if your blood doesn't boil for the right reasons...
Enjoy Toscanni and the orchestra that these idiots...the GOP guys who want to kill the arts in America - well this stuff was regular fare on radio and TV once upon a time...and should be now.
