There are just little gaffes and there are "I dunno's". Little stuff is recognized for what it is...just a mis-speak, a wrong word, a mispronunciation, a mistake - it happens to everyone...someone says millions when they mean billions...it is funny "with" not "at".
The "I dunno's" are a different animal. They are from the Rush Limbaugh "I have no clue but here is what I know" type of I dunno's. I heard Rush yesterday bloviating about a doctor who made a very straightforward observation about the cost:effect of heroic efforts to keep pre-mature babies alive when there was "no medical hope". Obviously this is a personal issue unimaginable to others not in the immediate situation. How it is handled privately between the parents and the physicians is just that - extremely private. However, Rush, in his crude, stupid knowledge of the matter went on to the "this is the way liberals think" rant and somehow linked it all up to Japan and the nuclear meltdowns and the liberal war on nuclear power. So what does this have to do with the Representative from Minnesota? The Ms. Bachmann - I wanna be president Ms. Bachmann?
It is speaking when you have no idea about which you are speaking. It is filling time with empty BS that sounds good but if you think about it demonstrates an ignorance of the subject that is stupid and stupefying.
Ms. Bachmann made a gaffe of sorts about the Minutemen of Lexington and Concord Fame (1 if by land 2 if by sea story...remember?) and how happy she was to be in New Hampshire with extreme patriot types who fought there.
Her followers will chalk it off to a "misspeak" when dumb and stupid is the real answer. Rush's listeners, when they hear the ElRushbo go into the deep end of the pool claim that he is an "entertainer" not a fact checker. Same Same.
How much better would we be if we didn't have this foolishness. These are serious times and we are ill served by dunces.

Now Ms. Bachmann had to have had that reference in her speaking notes and I can't at all say she "mis-spoke". She, like Rush, just said it...dumb and stupid as it was and I make the differential between "mistake" and "stupid" right here. Ms. Bachmann, like Mr. Limbaugh, is stupid. My definition of stupid is "smart enough to know better but too lazy to get it right".
