gypsy

Maurice Ravel wrote this piece for violin and piano (later converted to violin and orchestra) in 1924 and as the dedication was to the Hungarian violinist  Jelly d'Aranyi (no kidding)  and  was titled Tzigane; the name of the piece being taken from the generic European term for "gypsy" (in French  gitan, tsigane or tzigane rather than the Hungarian cigány).

Gypsys. The word is derived (thank you American Heritage Dictionary):

Alteration of Middle English gypcian, short for Egipcien, Egyptian (so called because Gypsies were thought to have come from Egypt)

Gypsy music is, to me, mysterious and full of allure. Casting aside images of Cairo rioting - while some see peasants dancing around a campfire with wagons and mules in the background, I see this.  For some reason I've always seen this.  Marthaler's vision is the perfect visual for my brain.
