Tough times for small businesses

Yahoo rarely runs an article on this subject but actually did this morning with observations on "why small businesses fail" - something of a Letterman Top Ten - and after watching and advising businesses of all types in their marketing and advertising for several decades the author makes a lot of good points.

One goes from something of a common sense examination to 10 minutes on CNBC or FOX Business and quickly enter another universe.  I was amazed to "learn" that business on the ritzy section of Madison Avenue was "brisk" this past year and that the top end retailers were having a banner time of it while Bookstores - the tradition "go to" gift for someone who has everything and Best Buy were struggling.

That translates to a very simple observation. Some people have money and a lot of it and a lot of people have little money and they can't really afford to shop.   No matter what the business, it takes people who need the goods and services.  That is called demand.  Demand has a gatekeeper and it is money. The more money I have the more I let myself go to "demand" - the higher the threshold on my wish list.  For most people right now it is rent, food and insurance. .. past that it is necessity rather than "wish".

Just a number 11 on this fellows ten reasons.
