I love the Constitution of the United States. It is an elegant document that did the best it could at the time and was the product of debate, give and take, concession and principle. Mr. Boehner's congress read a lot of it aloud yesterday, editing here and there so as not to remind anyone in that sea of mostly white faces that the birth of this nation was a struggling child's birth - of good parents who would lead and guide the child to maturity. Such a message would mean that the Constitution would grow with us, like a child grows, and as things change the "rules of the household" give and take, ebb and flow a bit.
Now we are beset by kids who didn't seem to have much "bringing up". They are arrogant and cocksure, petulant and full of a hubris not seen since the term was invented. The musical 1776 has a song in it that captures this sad state of affairs perfectly. Listen carefully to words. I may be on to something.

Eh, have you heard of amendments? Sounds like you haven't. Pffft!
ReplyDeletethat would make for a living growing constitution that changes as the world changes...you suprise me that you would accept such a notion.
ReplyDeleteEh, wrong! The Constitution has and will be amended as needed, but much like the Pledge of Allegiance, or the Gettysburg Address it's not a "living growing" child.
ReplyDeleteWere do you people come-up with all this childish nonsense? Do you just make things-up as you go? What fragile minds.
consult your history. ... and the two words "under God" that mysteriously appeared in a pledge set in stone.
ReplyDeleteits very nice to have the luxury of viewing history to suit your needs rather than the other way around.
