I have to admit that I went to Wiki to find the Burns lyrics that we trample on a bit to get these words. Peggy Noonan of the WSJ went there too this morning to write her column in the WSJ so I guess I'm in fast company. The song "looks back" and not forward...technically remember the old in a sentimental way - remembering only the good times and forgetting the bad. I guess that is New Years. I dunno. I'm never awake. I'll watch "It's a Wonderful Life" (see below) and sing along then.
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and auld lang syne* ?
CHORUS:
For auld lang syne, my jo,
for auld lang syne,
we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.
And surely ye’ll be your pint-stowp !
and surely I’ll be mine !
And we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and auld lang syne* ?
CHORUS:
For auld lang syne, my jo,
for auld lang syne,
we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.
And surely ye’ll be your pint-stowp !
and surely I’ll be mine !
And we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.
