If you have commuted into NYC for work for any length of time using the Long Island Railroad became the method of choice (between bad and worse). My commute was nearly 2 hours so often I, along with 20 or so brave souls would board the train at 5am, pitch black and freezing cold, find our usual seats (a train with 8 cars with 150 seats to a car to choose from) - we always sat in the same seats..little mushroom clumps. The first year you made conversation but you were spending more time with these folks daily then you spent with your spouse so after a while it was just the idea that you were sitting down with people who you knew completely. Then you spent a year reading. Work then bought you a laptop so you could be productive. After a while you just went to sleep.
When MP3 players came out you suddenly had a choice and would program two sets of music (or I did anyway). One to go into the city and one for the return. This was my arriving at NY Pennsylvania Station..Penn Station...last stop .. music.
