We seemingly have a world turned upside down. Big trouble in Korea, troops doing all kinds of work everywhere, a European banking system all out of kilter, the third year of a very hard recession here, mischief afoot in a lot of places....well it seems pretty endless.
Juxtapose that with kids from the worst slums in the hemisphere, living and trying to survive in Caracas, Venezuela and a 100 other villages with crime, gangs and numbing poverty. This is Angelica Olivo with the national high school orchestra of Venezuela - these kids are teenagers. The work is by Prokofiev, a Russian - contextually he might be from the moon but he isn't. This is as good a performance as you are likely to hear. The conductor is Claudio Abbado, for decades one of the world's best conductors - in a concert hall in Venezuela conducting kids, making absolutely exquisite music.
It gives me hope.
