by golly - a blue moon

Tonight's full moon is a blue moon as in "once in a blue moon" or  every three or four years we have a 13 full moon year.  Doing this advanced math, one month gets 2 full moons every now and then.  Actually there aren't two full moons this month but this is a blue moon anyway.  The rather convoluted explanation can be found here.

Back at the dawn of time, 1978 actually, I wrote a piece of music using Sandburg's Harvest moon which is the October full moon because that moon was also a blue moon.   The piece of music wasn't memorable and only exists on an old reel to reel Sony tape.  I have to opine that a reel to reel tape without  a tape player is a glove without a hand.  Anyway, here is Sandburg's poem.

Under the Harvest Moon by Carl Sandburg

Under the harvest moon,
When the soft silver
Drips shimmering
Over the garden nights,
Death, the gray mocker,
Comes and whispers to you
As a beautiful friend
Who remembers.

Under the summer roses
When the flagrant crimson
Lurks in the dusk
Of the wild red leaves,
Love, with little hands,
Comes and touches you
With a thousand memories,
And asks you
Beautiful, unanswerable questions.
