These are Kemp's Ridleys turtles. Endangered. Gulf of Mexico inhabitants (not all but a lot come from there). They are being released back into the Gulf and there is of course a debate..but off they go. Here is the article.
My granddaughters came across a box turtle on a walk the other day. They are pretty rare around here too - not like these Kemp's but we don't see them very often.
They crawl the same as the Kemp's and on land are about the slowest thing going but my poor box turtle doesn't swim - he just labors along -while these Kemp's turn into Angellina Ballerina when they hit the ocean. Swim well and prosper.
