I've attended 5 universities in my life. Julliard and Teachers College didn't have basketball teams so we are down to three. The first was Valparaiso in Indiana and Gene Bartow who followed John Wooden at UCLA was the coach. This was a time of team buses and pep bands that road on the bus and Bartow also teaching badmitton (no kidding) in the phys ed department.
I went on to Michigan State which was zip as a basketball school back then. Now it is a power and mainly because it has had two straight coaches that reflect the campus and the school. Good, decent fellows who thnk of things like alma mater and students and are part of the fabric of the place, and not ruling some kingdom. My third school was the University of Kentucky and there was a world of difference. As the president of the school once said "someday I hope to build a reputation for academics here that the basketball team will be proud of". Anyway Izzo is staying at State. We are better for it.

Izzo just knows that Lebron is leaving Cleveland. And that he nixed him anyway.
ReplyDeleteA solid coach is not always what you need if you want to be sucessful. I mean look at St Johns. They had several "good guys" in a row and have stunk out the joint. But Jim Calhoun at Uconn has been a jerk but has won like crazy.
You pays your money and you makes your choice.
