South Carolina has a fair sized black population, totaling out at about 30%. The chances for black politicians generally however is about like standing between the cowboys Slim and None. Until the justice department stepped in, most town and city governments were elected "at large" so in cities where there was the 70:30 non-black:black ratio the chances of seeing a black mayor were, well, it just didn't happen.
This is the state of state rep. Knox calling one candidate (and the US president) a "rag head" and now we have Alvin Greene winning the democratic primary with 59% of the vote. That Greene is unemployed, virtually penniless, raised and spent no money and is headed for a criminal trial under the wierdest circumstances - well a few folks think that something might be afoot down there.
I just have vivid memories of an article my parents sent me from where they retired in South Carolina that hit the papers the last time the justice department took a look at this wierd little state and it's election issues..let me quote ..said J...D..."It just sticks in my craw that them [sic!] northern jew justice folks would come down here and poke around in how we run things". I'm not kidding.
