Actually there is an argument to be made on both sides..

But murals like this don't help it along.  Fremont, Nebraska passed an ordinace regarding renting to illegals and hiring illegals.  You can read about it here.

Immigration is simply a mess and no one benefits from it the way it is. I live on the far eastern part of an island and every morning 100 or so potential "illegals" gather at the 7-11 for drive-by work pickups.  They are a decent lot, generally friendly and completely, to me anyway, non-threatening. We are a long way from Latin America or northern South America where they come from but then again they are a long way from home as well.  If they are in Fremont, a town of perhaps 25,000 they are about 4% of the population.

The truth is that illegal immigration is declining in the US. After fully 60% of ALL ILLEGALS coming in during the Bush administration our economy has run into a hard spot and this is no longer the endless vista of minimum wage jobs.

So Fremont passes these ordinances partly out of political spite at the federal government for not taking care of business which it hasn't been doing for 20 years or more and, there was a flood during Bush II that placed in a numbers mess that defies resolution. But the topic here isn't the immigration laws nor Fremont's ordinances - IT IS THE MURAL and the message.  Take a good look at it. Full of flags, half the males in military uniforms, real apple pie stuff. Strangely absent are any demographic other than suburban patriotic whites. 95% white to be more exact.

I'm not calling Fremont racist or latino-phobic. I'm not saying a word. But the good citizens of Fremont can and probably will get painted right into a corner over a violation of the 14th amendment at the very least and if I were a smart lawyer suing the town, I would be very careful to hold all my news conferences right in front of that lily-white mural.

  1. I think the message is that Fremont requires an American flag in every hand.
