In 1973, I was living in Kentucky and was a band director at the University. We were invited to Churchill Downs to play "My Old Kentucky Home" before the Derby. I bought a $2.00 win ticket on Secretariat because someone told me to. It won $5.00 and I still have the ticket somewhere.

I don't want you to think that I know anything about any of this horse racing stuff but I have to tell you, watching a dozen or so of these animals at full speed (about 40 mph it seems), with their colors, the jockeys, the roar of the crowd...the absolute determination..well. It is magic. Certainly one of the great visuals.
