I played this piece in college both for band and orchestra. Being principal trumpet was an honor and a vice. I nearly died of nerves every night we did this on our tours.
It is really a set of very hard "licks". The trumpet part is solo with horns to a high f above high c which means zip to anyone who reads this except that playing those melodies, so incredibly exposed, well it is tight wire with no net. That this "youth orchestra" has half a dozen trumpets and 8 french horns playing it in unison and no one missing a note....well damn hard.
