I'm sure you all remember Eliot's news conference of the "I have sinned" variety. And you must remember that he was Attorney General of NY before that and took on Goldman and Paulson and Merrill Lynch and Grasso at the NYSE.....and basically said these guys were up to no good. He always got a big fine from them and folks lined up to call him a political hack.
I found this quote from Harvey Pitt, former head of the SEC which I think is particularly telling as to how the Goldman Sachs et.al. stuff came about:
"...benefited the state coffers rather than investors. "Why? Because he wasn't concerned about investors." He was especially caustic on the issue of Spitzer's suit against Dick Grasso, former head of the NYSE. He thinks it is a private dispute. "When you get past the cat-fighting, he's also concerned about hedge funds". This coming from the outgoing head of the SEC.
And anyone wonder why we got problems in River City?
