Das Boot

There is a marvelous ride if you ever want to get from the east end of long island over to Connecticut (New London). It isn't cheap but it saves driving into the city and 100 miles of I95 in Ct. where there appears to be no history of driver's education.

I got on this first time perhaps 25 years ago when the "fleet" was very small and the boats were like corks in a bath tub. This one is a WWII landing craft that actually was at Normandy on June 6 and it takes in about a zillion cars and even more people. On this fair day with a northerly wind of about 30knots and whitecaps everywhere it is still a bit of an adventure of lurching and some spray that actually reaches the passenger sitting area but it is glorious.  The egg/bacon on a roll and coffee (no long $1.25 like 25 years ago) is worth the trip for no good reason than sitting in the middle of Long Island Sound, clear air, clouds flying by....life is good.  Listen to some Debussy and get in the spirit of things.
