I saw the Addams Family on Broadway last evening. It is a very loosely constructed takeoff on that iconic TV series of the 60s that made Lurch a name like xerox or kleenex...well not exactly but you get the idea...I mean where was the prior Lurch figure before this.
Nathan Lane took on a Lawrence Welk accent of sorts. Bebe Neuwirth has somewhat lost what was once a magnificent voice. Here is a trailer that someone put on youtube..the song is now out of it and a tango/not fandango put in its place. The music was, at some times, so bad as to make you cringe. The book was just so so except for some one-liners that were about as good as anything since ...well since.
The critics hated it to a man. I mean snark. Terrible reviews. The audience on the other hand couldn't get enough of it. It was insane. Bedlam. What can you say? Except for a few production numbers, most memorably Fester's "The Moon and Me" which may be the best little song set staging production EVER on broadway...and I really mean that....it was WONDEROUSLY CLEVER...and a set production that was also as good as it gets...well it was a humdrum show as one critic said: "other than no book, songs and lyrics the seats were too small but the restrooms were nice"....Well. On reflection. THE AUDIENCE LOVED IT. The critics can go scratch. THAT AUDIENCE LOVED IT. end of initial review.
