A few years ago the Chicago Symphony (CSO)opened the season at Carnegie Hall in NYC with as breathtaking a concert as I, a professional musician of 50 years, have ever heard.
The CSO has had perhaps the greatest collection of virtuoso players for 20+ years of any orchestra in the US. I was able to study on occasion with Adoph Herseth, their principal trumpet who frankly could play anything..I mean anything...anything. The older he got the better he got and principal trumpet in one of the 3-4 greatest orchestras on earth is no mean feat. Anyway when the CSO came to town they were a mix of the old and a lot of new players.
They literally tore the house down. The concert was difficult but meant to show that they hadn't skipped a beat in the talent pool and were, frankly, better than ever. It did. They then played a bon-bon encoure "Tico Tico" and you tube has two versions for orchestra up for viewing...The CSO's and another by the Berlin Philharmonic...another one of the great 5 ensembles of all time and present. Same piece, same conductor and they sound so different.....
I could teach an entire "music practices" course from Youtube. thank you.
