New York Times - wrong 2 days in a row

The Shinnecocks are a local Indian tribe that has been fighting for recognition for years.  One obvious goal of this is the right to gaming licenses that bypass state laws.

Here on Eastern Long Island, there are high speed ferrys that take you from the Orient Point landing to New London, Ct., and on to waiting busses to whisk you to the huge Indian Casino complexes waiting like alligators for the innocent.  Our beloved NYTimes wants the Shinnecocks to reconsider and since they sit on some of the Earth's more valuable real estate,....well NYTimes...do what?

What would a well sited casino mean to these folks?  Wealth beyond imagination of course.  What would it mean to Eastern Long Island who have a short summer to feast off the city people and then 7-8 months of scrimping to keep businesses afloat?  Take a look at the job listings in the local newspapers here. Selling land is a one time thing.  It might result in a windfall but no  long term wealth or source of jobs. Once that home is built it is built and we are back to service companies fixing things for the uberrich who could afford the waterfront.

What the area needs are jobs other than clerks at outlet malls and summer waitstaff.  Casinos don't have to be dens of iniquity as anyone who has seen the Hard Rock near Ft. Lauderdale or the S. Connecticut Casinos will attest.

Start the new year right, my dear NYTIMES. Lighten up.
