Words probably fail in getting to the heart of the Haitian disaster. Images are close but words don't do the issue justice so we just won't try today. It is sad beyond belief that a people, who happen to live on an island that simply has been sacked of any wealth and political justice for decades if not centuries has to indure this calamity.
This should go to show how vital it is for the government of any nation to put in place a structure that can start to deal with this level of meyhem. This is beyond Katrina and we couldn't deal with that let alone this and now we ask a nation that has less going for it than my backyard to deal with it.
We must help. Obviously. Haiti is of no consequence to Wall Street or the powers that be. It is a fly. A blip on our radar screen economically and politically. It is, however very big on the moral front and we should be ashamed if we don't do what we can.
Doing what we can alsom means doing something awful to the profiteers and scam artists who rise to this occasion. Here is some FBI/Justice dept advice:
--Do not respond to any unsolicited (spam) incoming emails, which also include requests to click links embedded within those email messages.
--Be wary of individuals presenting themselves as surviving victims or as officials asking for donations via email or social networking sites.
--Make sure to verify the legitimacy of nonprofit organizations asking for donations before following a link to a site contained in one of their emails.
--Do not click on any files or pictures claiming to be from the disaster area that are contained in these emails, as they may contain viruses or some other kind of malware.
--Do not give out your personal or financial information to anyone soliciting contributions.
--If you are going to contribute, make sure it goes to a known organization. Do not rely on others to make the donation on your behalf.
Anyone who has received an email similar to what has been described above or has been a victim of this should notify the IC3 at www.ic3.gov
